The conference " Careers in information, libraries and archives in the era of digital differentiation" aims to bring together Arab, French and international researchers to present the results of their research in information and communication fields, including technological advances developed or adopted by the information and documentation centers (libraries, documentation centers, archives).
The aim of this conference is to promote research on information in the digital age and particularly the Web 2.0 and its technologies. These technologies are now required for all services offered by information centers:
- Scanning and digital documents
- Managing the lifecycle of documents
- Metadata
- Social indexing : folksonomies and ontologies
- Wikis
- RSS
- Social networks
- Blogs…
The availability of online resources disseminates a new way to preserve and appreciate the cultural and scientific patrimony and allows a better use of such resources for the purpose of study, work and culture. The exploitation by information centers of the web 2.0 services will help them to improve their role as spaces for meeting, exchange and collaboration.
This session comes at a crutial time in the history of the Mediterranean and arab countries as well as in the history the Middle East, where digital information and ICT have been instrumented in the social and political change in these countries.
However, many challenges standing in the way of information professions can be identified:
- The financial challenges associated with investing in technologies and their implementation;
- Challenges related to professional training and control technology applications that can offer innovative services in libraries and information centers;
- Cultural challenges, psychological resistance against the introduction of technological applications and resistance to change and adoption of ICT;
- The social challenges: heterogeneity of the actors involved and lack of collaboration between them (librarians, archivists, historians,….).
The conference targets an audience of researchers and students but also professionals (information specialists, information systems designers, publishers ...) concerned with the changes facing the field of info-doc as far as literature, technology and the public are concerned.
